It’s the fake news of our little world.

A few savvy marketers have created the impression that you should be shooting for massive reach and revenue, and that launches are somehow the ticket to online riches.

The reality is far different.

Here’s what I’ve seen in practice:

Real-World Launching Key #1: The path to results is through small steady improvements over time.

I’d mentioned previously the myth of the giant, blockbuster launch.

Not only is this unrealistic but it can distract you from the real opportunity:

Patiently improving your launches over time.

The key is to learn from each launch and identify ways to make it even better next time.

If you launch 4 times in a year, and improve 10% each time, that’s 46% compounded improvement.

For example, imagine going from enrolling 20 people in a group program, to 30 people.

These incremental improvements don’t make for dramatic stories but they can the foundation of a real, sustainable course business.

Real-World Launching Key #2: You must invest enough time and energy in your launch to avoid mediocre results.

Many course creators I meet with are stuck in a frustrating place with their launches:

They’ve made the commitment to offering their course, but their launches are yielding only modest signups and revenue.

It can feel like you’re trying to sprint through quicksand.

Somewhat ironically, in most cases it’s because they aren’t putting enough into their launches.

You will launch faster, easier, and better — and have the persistence to stick with it! — if you apply a solid framework and expert guidance.

  • A clear course focus. This is not the time to be exploring general course ideas or trying to figure out if courses are the right fit for your business. We have other trainings that can help with those questions, but this bootcamp is 100% focused on helping you launch a specific course to a specific group of people.

 

  • Some validation of demand. You should have already determined that people are willing to pay for your course. You might have run a pilot test of the course with a small group, or offered in-workshops with a similar focus, or pre-sold your course. Whatever approach you’ve taken, it’s important you have a clear indication that there’s demand for your course. Without that demand, it won’t matter how good your launch process is.

 

  • An audience/community you can launch your course to. Now, this doesn’t have to be huge — we started launching courses back when we only had a few hundred people on our mailing list. But there needs to be a core group of people you can reach in some way – through your own mailing list, through partners, through professional associations that support you, or through targeted ads.

Having worked on countless courses — both our own and those of our clients — we have come to develop 3 core principles that guide all our work on marketing and launching:

1. Authority

Are you able to present yourself as a trusted authority? Or do you sometimes feel tentative or hesitant in saying “follow me?”

Until we accept our authority, we can’t ask people to work with us.

If you are feeling at all hesitant in your authority, I’d like you to think about your work in a slightly different way.

Consider that your participants, the people you serve, need two things to change: Information, and inspiration.

You have both.

You have information that can help people see the world in a different way.

And you can inspire them to think and act differently – maybe in a small, focused way, but a way that makes a difference…

Say, for example, you’re a health coach and you’ve discovered that people are intimidated by and tired of “diets.”

You can help them think about their health and nutrition in a more positive way, leading them to a healthier way of living and being.

Stand in your authority. Believe in your ability to help your tribe.

This is the foundation of successful marketing and a course launch that works.

2. Confidence

It saddens me to see genuine, caring teachers be so tentative in offering their work to the world.

Stand up straight. Raise your voice. Be confident.

You can be humble, you can be gentle, but you must still be confident.

Let a genuine intention underlie your confidence: that you’ll leave no student behind.

That if someone signs up for your program and is struggling, you’ll move mountains to help her succeed.

Then let your confident voice ring, in your offer and in your teaching.

3. Care

I think many people run away from “marketing” and “sales pages” because they conflate these ideas with negative intentions and unethical persuasion.

With using “tricks” to get people to sign up and give you money. Like some kind of twisted game.

And, yes, there *are* people that use those tricks and play psychological games.

They hide in the shadows of the ‘internet marketing’ underworld. (You know you are there if you’re being forced to watch an hour-long video before you get even a scrap of information about what kind of course you’d be registering for or how much it costs!).

But that’s not where we’re going to work.

We’re going out into the sunshine, to play and share with openness. Instead of tricks, we’ll use caring.

Because truly great learning experiences can only come from people who care.

Here’s an easy way to assess your intention. As you begin to write your sales page, or an email invitation to your course, ask yourself… can you “infuse your words with a silent but sincere wish for your reader’s happiness and well-being?”

Will this program help me if I’m just getting started and I don’t have a clear course idea in mind?

We call this the “Exploration” stage of course creation. It’s an exciting place to be, full of possibility… but also uncertainty. Given that uncertainty, we recommend you further develop your course idea before you focus on marketing and launching.

I’m an experienced teacher and I’ve launched courses before. Will this program be too basic for me?
